QUEENS, NEW YORK (ALBOENEWS) — HAZMAT crews are reportedly on-scene after a package exploded when a resident tried to open it.
The package was reportedly in the mailbox, and when the person tried to open it, it exploded, leaving the individual with burns.
UPDATE: A 73-year-old man is in serious condition after sustaining burns when the package exploded. HAZMAT crews, FDNY, NYPD and the FBI are all investigating (6:05 p.m. ET)
The 73-year-old man involved in the explosion yesterday has been left in critical condition with second and third degree burns. The explosive, which was shaped similar to an oatmeal container, blew up after the man picked it up off of his doorstep. The explosive was rigged so that it would explode when opened. NYPD says they do not think the package was sent through the mail. The man, who remains unnamed, sustained the burns to more than 80% of his body, and was found on fire when emergency crews arrived. UPDATE: Unfortunately the 73-year-old man has died as a result of his injuries.
