PINELLAS COUNTY, FLORIDA (ALBOENEWS) — Florida health officials say they have confirmed the first sexually-transmitted case of Zika virus in Florida this year.

The new patient’s partner developed Zika symptoms during a trip to Cuba, and later gave the disease to their partner sexually.

According to the Associated Press, “Zika can cause a mild illness, with fever, rash, and joint pain. Infection during pregnancy can lead to severe brain-related birth defects.”

There have been 118 cases of Zika this year in Florida, although no mosquitos have tested positive in the state for the disease this year.
