CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA (ALBOENEWS) — A Virginia State helicopter that was monitoring the situation in Charlottesville has crashed in a wooded area, according to witnesses on the ground.

According to BNO News, the helicopter crashed around 5 p.m. ET while it was flying low over a residential area. It then crashed down in a wooded area nearby.

There is no word as to what caused the crash.

BNO News is reporting that the FAA has confirmed two people were aboard the crashed helicopter. There is still no word on their conditions.

The Daily Progress in Charlottesville has reported that the two people aboard the crashed helicopter have died. No one on the ground were injured. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause.

According to AP, officials say the deaths of two people in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville have been linked to the violent white nationalist rally earlier in the day. It is not immediately clear as to how the two are connected.

Virginia State Police have identified the two officers as Pilot Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Pilot Berke Bates. There are no indications of foul play at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
