HONSHU, JAPAN (ALBOENEWS) — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, according to seismology officials.

The earthquake occurred at 4:22 p.m. ET, or 5:22 a.m. local time in Japan.

The earthquake struck 46 miles E of Hachinohe, Japan and occurred at a depth of 32 km, according to USGS.

USGS says there is a 34 percent chance of fatalities resulting from the earthquake.
