AP reports that Energy Secretary Rick Perry said on Thursday that using fossil fuels to power electricity in African villages can help to prevent sexual assault.

He said that during a recent visit to Africa, he was encountered by a young girl who told him electricity was important to her because otherwise she must read a book by the light of a fire with noxious fumes.

Perry said electricity is important “from the standpoint of sexual assault. When the lights are on, when you have light that shines the righteousness, if you will, on those types of acts.”
