A swarm of at least five moderate to strong earthquakes have struck Iraq and Iran over the past few hours, according to the USGS.
The first earthquake struck NNE of Kerman, Iran, at 10:18 p.m. ET Wednesday evening and was registered at 4.9. A chain of earthquakes then began in the 2:00 a.m. ET hour, with a 5.5 earthquake E of Mandali, Iraq, quickly being followed by a 5.3 ENE of Mandali, a 5.2 ENE of Mandali, and a 5.4 E of Mehran, Iran. There is no word from USGS on any reasoning for this swarm. (source)
