Aetna has settled a lawsuit, and agreed to pay $17 million after they revealed the HIV status of thousands of patients.
“According to court documents, the display windows of large mailing envelopes revealed confidential medical information. The mailings were sent to approximately 12,000 customers in at least 23 states,” according to reports.
Aetna has called the mistake “unacceptable” and says they are working to make sure nothing similar happened ever again. As part of the settlement, the customers whose privacy was breached with the mailings will be paid at least $500 each.
