A glitch in Wells Fargo’s systems led to many customer’s accounts to appear empty late Wednesday and into Thursday.

The error stemmed from a glitch in the bank’s online bill payment system. Some online bills were being processed twice, resulting in the accounts being emptied. In a few cases, it even led to the accounts being put under zero, risking overdraft fees for the customers.

“We are aware of the online Bill Pay situation which was caused by an internal processing error,” Wells Fargo communications manager Hilary O’Byrne said, “We are currently working to correct it, and there is no action required for impacted customers at this time. Any fees or charges that may have been incurred as a result of this error will be taken care of. We apologize for any inconvenience.” (source) 4:10 p.m. ET January 18, 2018
