A man died when he was hit over the head by a metal fire-escape step that fell seven stories in the Soho section of New York City. Richard Marchhart, 58, was walking down Broadway near Howard Street at around 1:45 p.m. Friday when the step fell, hitting him in the head and fracturing his skull.

Marchhart died from his injuries early Saturday morning at Bellevue Hospital. A 24-year-old woman was also struck by the debris and escaped with only a minor cut to the head.

Officials said that the metal step came loose during a routine inspection by an engineer.  The property’s owner was issued a violation for “failure to safeguard the building,” according to a rep with the Department of Buildings.
