During a speech Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute, Senator Orrin Hatch heavily criticized the supporters of “ObamaCare.”
“We […] finally did away with the individual mandate tax that was established under that wonderful bill called ‘Obamacare.’ Now, if you didn’t catch on, I was being very sarcastic. That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I’ve ever seen,” said Hatch, “Now, some of you may have loved it. If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met. This was one– and there are a lot of ’em up on Capitol Hill from time.”
He went on to say that the individual mandate imposed by the law was a regressive part of tax code. Former Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney is running to replace Hatch, who will be retiring, as a Utah Senator.
A spokesman for Hatch’s office said that the comments were meant in jest.
UPDATE: Senator Hatch has apologized regarding his comments. “Yesterday, I made a poorly worded joke about Obamacare supporters—a joke that was not reflective of my actual feelings towards my friends on the other side.” (source)
