A proposed Rhode Island bill would charge residents of the state $20 to unblock porn and “offensive” content online.

The bill would also force internet providers to comply with the law or else face steep fines. The fees would be collected by the State Treasurer and then used to fund the Council on Human Trafficking. It was proposed by two Democrats State Senators- Frank Ciccone and Hanna Gallo.

Opponents of the bill have stated that the lawmakers had been unnecessarily lumping human trafficking with sex work.
