Reynaldo Bignone, the last President of Argentina’s dictatorship that spanned from 1976-1983 has died at the age of 90.

Bignone had been spending a life sentence under house arrest for several human rights violations. He was named president by a military junta in 1982 and was one of the last survivors from a dark chapter in Argentina’s history.

Human rights groups estimate up to 30,000 people were kidnapped, tortured or killed during the dictatorship. Many were pregnant women who “disappeared” shortly after giving birth in torture centers. It was also known for its theft of infants.
