Lawmakers in New York passed a bill this week that banned police from having sex with people that are in custody.

The bill states that detained people are unable to consent to sex, which removed a loophole for police officers that claimed that the sex was consensual. Laws in New York allow police officers to say that they had consensual sex with a detainee, and be convicted of a maximum of a misdemeanour.
