A Hawaii beach was shut after a 25-year-old man was attacked by a shark on Saturday morning. The man was paddleboarding with his father about 150 yards offshore at Kukio Beach near Hualalai when he was bumped off the board and bitten by a shark. He was taken back to shore by personnel from the Kukio Community Association. The man suffered extensive injuries to his hand and leg. Bystanders treated the man with multiple tourniquets an ambulance arrived at the scene, according to Big Island Now.
He was transported by helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition and flown to The Queen’s Medical Center later in the day. The man’s current condition is not known.
Hawaii County Civil Defense announced that the beach would be closed to the public for the rest of the day following the attack. A decision on reopening the beaches will be made after observations on Sunday morning.
