Former Hawaii Senator Daniel Akaka has died at the age of 93, after being in the hospital for several months.

Akaka was the first native Hawaiian to serve in the U.S. Senate, and was a strong advocate for both them and veterans in his more than 3 and a half decades in Congress. He also maintained a constant stace to expand Hawaii national parks.
