Kentucky Governor Bevin responded to teacher’s protests in the state that led to school closures Friday, saying “I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted.”
The comments were stated to a reporter for WDRB-TV. The response comes after lawmakers voted to override Bevin’s veto on a state budget that increased public education spending, thanks to a $480 million tax increase.
This vote came as teachers surrounded the capitol, rallying for the increase in funding and demanding a better pension program. According to WKYT-TV, the state of Kentucky is at least $41 billion short of what it needs to pay retirement benefits over the next 30 years.
