Multiple ambulances have been called to the scene of a major accident involving a school bus and a dump truck on a New Jersey highway, police say.

A call about the collision on Route 80 westbound near exit 25 in Stanhope came in shortly after 10 a.m. Mount Olive police did not immediately say there were children aboard, but police radio indicated there may have been more than three dozen kids on the bus at the time of the accident. According to NBC New York, at least 2 are dead; one student and one chaperone.

Police radio also indicated reports of significant injuries and calls for more than a dozen ambulances.

Photos show a heavily damaged bus on its side in the median, surrounded by dozens of emergency and law enforcement vehicles. The front of the bus is barely recognizable, a mangled chunk of broken-apart machinery spread from the highway shoulder lane through the median.
