New photos show that the FIU bridge collapse that killed 6 and injured 9 others may have been preventable.
The photos show that massive cracks had developed in the bridge in the exact region that was believed to be the source of the collapse. The cracks also showed far more extensive damage than was originally reported.
According to the bridge’s designers, FIGG Engineering, they were aware of the cracks, but did not see them as a “safety threat.”
“Obviously some repairs or whatever will have to be done, but from a safety perspective we don’t see that there’s any issue there so we’re not concerned about it from that perspective,” the engineer, W. Denney Pate, said, “although obviously the cracking is not good and something’s going to have to be, ya know, done to repair that.”
