According to local reports, five people have died and 17 are injured after a bridge collapsed at around 4 p.m. local time when a number of vehicles were passing over it in Calcutta, India.

Five cars and a minibus are trapped underneath piles of debris from the collapsed section of the bridge. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, with four cranes and 500 rescue workers assisting in the operation.

Pictures from the scene show several cars, motorbikes and a minibus lying on top of the collapsed bridge.
