Legendary producer Gary Hurtz, who helped to launch the original “Star Wars” trilogy has died at the age of 78.

Kurtz worked as a producer for “A New Hope” as well as “Empire Strikes Back.” He worked alongside George Lucas on several major projects, culminating in the famous sci-fi trilogy. The two of them had a falling out after disagreements on plot points, leading to him leaving the project before “Return of the Jedi.”

Kurtz was a conscientious objector in Vietnam who refused to carry a loaded weapon. Warned he could be thrown into a military jail, he told the Marines they could use his talents as a filmmaker, and worked with them to film the war. Kurtz had been fighting cancer.
