A new study from the University of Southern California has found that many of the negative criticism of the “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” film were caused by Russian trolls.

The study examined the online response to the blockbuster movie, finding “evidence of deliberate, organized political influence measures disguised as fan arguments.” The paper went on to say that nearly 51% of the negative reviews were tweeted by those with political motivations or that were bots.

The paper concluded by stating that the intent of the reviews was to cause dysfunction in American society, as shown below:

“The likely objective of these measures is increasing media coverage of the fandom conflict, thereby adding to and further propagating a narrative of widespread discord and dysfunction in American society. Persuading voters of this narrative remains a strategic goal for the U.S. alt-right movement, as well as the Russian Federation.”
