A mother and her boyfriend are facing the death penalty for the murder and torture of a 10-year-old boy in Los Angeles.

Heather Maxine Barron, 29, and Kareem Ernesto Leiva, 32, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to amended charges that now include one count of child abuse in addition to one count of murder and torture in the death of Anthony Avalos. If convicted, they could face a maximum of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

The boy was found by police seriously injured on June 20th and was rushed to the hospital where he died the next day.
