Three girls and one woman who were with a Girl Scout troop picking up litter along a road were killed in a hit-and-run accident in Wisconsin on Saturday morning, officials said.
The driver of the vehicle was 21-year-old Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Treu fled the scene but later turned himself in, according to police. A fourth girl who was struck by the vehicle remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday evening.
The girls were picking up litter in a ditch along a highway overpass about 11:40 a.m. when a black Ford F-150 pickup veered off the road and hit the group, police said. The driver then sped off. The children were area Girl Scouts in the fourth grade at Halmstad Elementary School in Chippewa Falls.
