A father purposely drowned his two sons, who both had severe autism, by driving his car off a California pier so he could cash in on a $6 million insurance policy, prosecutors said. Ali Elmezayen, 44, allegedly came up with the pan two years before pressing on the gas of his car and sending it crashing into the Port of Los Angeles on April 9, 2015.

The FBI wrote an affidavit in support of Elmezayen’s arrest for insurance fraud last week. Eight-year-old Adbelkarim and 13-year-old Elhassan, who were both severely autistic and couldn’t swim. They were found strapped into their car seats.

Elmezayen collected more than $260,000 in insurance payouts for his sons’ deaths and wired more than $170,000 back to his native Egypt, prosecutors said.
