Federal officials are investigating after at least six Sea Lions were found shot dead off the Washington coast.

A total of 13 sea lions have been found dead in Puget Sound since September. A seventh was also found decapitated. Officials believe that the crimes may have been the acts of fishermen that had to deal with the animals competing for fish in the area.

It’s illegal to kill or harm sea lions, which are protected by federal law and penalties that include up to a year’s imprisonment and a $25,000 fine.
